Springfield, Missouri — Est. 1913
The Pythian Castle
Built by the Knights of Pythias as a fraternal lodge and orphanage, the Pythian Castle became a military hospital and POW detention facility during World War II. The suffering layered into its stone walls over more than a century has made it one of the most actively investigated paranormal sites in the Midwest.
A Fortress of Fraternity and Sorrow
The Pythian Castle was constructed in 1913 by the Knights of Pythias, a fraternal organization that used the imposing Romanesque structure as a lodge hall, orphanage, and home for widows and the elderly. The castle's thick limestone walls and turrets gave it the appearance of a medieval fortress — an aesthetic that would prove fitting for the dark chapters ahead.
During World War II, the U.S. Army requisitioned the building and converted it into a military hospital and detention facility for German and Italian prisoners of war. Accounts from that era describe soldiers dying within its walls, prisoners held in the basement, and a general atmosphere of despair that seemed to seep into the stone itself.
After the war, the castle passed through several owners and fell into prolonged neglect. Decades of abandonment left the structure deteriorating — and, according to investigators, increasingly active. The castle was eventually purchased and restored as a private event and tour venue, opening its doors to paranormal investigators who have documented some of the most compelling evidence in the region.
Notable Areas
Documented Locations Within the Castle
The Dungeon
The castle's basement served as a POW detention area during WWII. Investigators consistently report shadow figures, disembodied voices, and equipment malfunctions in this section. The oppressive atmosphere is noted even by skeptics.
The Ballroom
Once a grand gathering hall for the Knights of Pythias, the ballroom has been the site of reported apparitions in period dress, unexplained music, and full-body manifestations captured on thermal imaging.
The Tower
The castle's turret offers commanding views of Springfield — and, according to multiple accounts, a persistent presence. Visitors report being touched, hearing footsteps on the spiral stair, and feeling watched from the upper windows.
The Orphanage Quarters
The upper floors once housed orphaned children under the care of the Knights. EVP sessions in these rooms have produced child-like voices, and investigators have reported toys and objects moving without explanation.
“Whatever remains in those walls, it has had more than a century to settle in.”
