Dark empty conservatory with high ceilings

The Conservatory

Documented 2024

The Conservatory at the Crescent Hotel dates to the building's origins as a college for young women, when it served as a music and performance space. The room has been repurposed across the hotel's various incarnations, but its original character persists in the architecture — high ceilings, large windows, and an acoustics profile that makes every sound carry further than it should.

Investigators who work the Conservatory consistently report the same technical problem: equipment failure. Batteries drain without explanation — fully charged devices going dead within minutes of entering the room. Cameras malfunction. Audio recorders cut out mid-session. The phenomenon is documented across multiple teams using different equipment, which rules out a single device defect as the cause.

My recorder had a full charge when I walked in. Forty minutes later it was dead. I have never had that happen anywhere else.

— Investigator account, The Conservatory, 2023

The cold drafts reported in the Conservatory are unusual because the room is sealed. Windows that have not been opened in years, no active ventilation running, and yet guests and investigators describe a moving cold air that passes through the space at irregular intervals. Thermal readings have confirmed temperature drops of several degrees that appear and dissipate without a mechanical source.

No specific presence has been identified in the Conservatory. The activity there reads as environmental rather than personal — the room itself seems to resist investigation rather than engage with it. Whether that resistance is meaningful or simply a property of the space is a question the index has not yet answered.
